Babanuki

A card game played by Chibi Usa and Tomoe Hotaru. Chibi Usa was good at the game, and when they were trapped in U-Ikasaman's multidimensional domain, they challenged the Daimon to a match. Chibi Usa won thanks to her skill at bluffing, but the Daimon demanded that Hotaru beat her as well. Hotaru was much less confident at the game, but managed to triumph thanks to encouragement of her friends. (118)

Berthier

(Amano Yuri)

BerthierThe second-youngest of the four Phantom Sisters of the Black Moon Clan. Like her sisters, she was employed by Rubeus to destroy both the 'Rabbit' and the Silver Crystal in the Juuban of the past. (060, 068) Berthier was instructed to contaminate Crystal Points with Dark Power in order to destabilise the future barriers of Crystal Tokyo. (061) When on missions, Berthier usually preferred letting her Droids handle the bulk of the workload, threatening them with severe punishment if they failed. (062)

After Koan defected to the enemy, the pressure was on Berthier to prove her dedication. She accepted a mission to contaminate the Crystal Point situated underneath the Chess Tower, and attempted to flood the centre of the building with her Dark Water attack. However, Mizuno Ami noticed her, and transformed into Sailor Mercury in order to fend her off. Berthier retreated, but was now armed with the knowledge of Sailor Mercury's true identity. Berthier entered the World Chess Tournament being held in the tower, and progressed to the final in which she played against Ami. Ami won the game, at which point Berthier destroyed the cameras relaying the match to the rest of the building, and challenged Sailor Mercury. Ami transformed, while the rest of the Sailor Team entered the room to help her. However, Berthier sealed the others into a bubble and demanded to play another game of chess with Sailor Mercury. However, the game was heavily rigged against Sailor Mercury: she began with fewer pieces, losing a piece caused part of her body to become encased in ice, and losing the game would condemn the rest of the Sailor Team to death. Berthier urged Sailor Mercury to forfeit and save herself, but she refused. Petz and Calaveras then appeared, hoping to share in the glory of Berthier's imminent victory, but Tuxedo Kamen appeared and disrupted the game, freeing Sailor Mercury and the others. Petz and Calaveras quickly retreated, blaming Berthier's incompetence. Devastated by their betrayal, Berthier initiated a suicidal Dark Water Full Power attack, quickly filling the whole room with ice. Koan struggled through the blizzard to reach her sister, and convinced her to let Sailor Moon help her. Berthier relented, and was purified by the Silver Crystal. After this, she joined Koan in her civilian life in Tokyo. (071)

Shortly afterwards, Koan and Berthier were kidnapped from the Hikawa Shrine by Petz and Calaveras, and were used as bait to ensnare the Sailor Team. During the ensuing battle, they were attacked by Petz, as was Calaveras, and it became clear that the staff Rubeus had given Petz to increase her power was driving her insane. Sailor Venus separated Petz from the staff, at which point Rubeus appeared and announced that the stick was sabotaged, and that Petz and Calaveras would be sacrificed in order to kill the Sailor Team. The staff created a black hole that threatened to suck everyone in, but the Sailor Team jumped into the black hole and used Sailor Planet Power to destroy the staff. Koan then asked Sailor Moon to purify her sisters, which she did. Now reunited, the Phantom Sisters established a cosmetics business, Beauty Quartette, in Tokyo, (072)

Berthier was later reunited with her ex-superior Saphir, after he arrived in the twentieth century pursued by Wiseman. Saphir was already seriously injured from his last encounter with the sorcerer, and Petz took him to the sisters' house and dressed his injuries. Despite the danger, he insisted on going to speak to Prince Dimande about Wiseman, but he was killed before he could talk to his brother. (086)

Droids used by Berthier were: Atsugessho (061) and Nipasu (062).

Beryl, Queen

(Han Keiko)

Queen BerylA powerful sorceress who commanded the forces of the Dark Kingdom. (001)

Queen Beryl was a noblewoman on Earth during the time of the Silver Millennium. She was recruited by Queen Metalia as the figurehead for her attack on the Moon’s advanced civilisation. Beryl stirred up resentment amongst the Earth’s populace, helped by Metalia who corrupted the minds of a large proportion of the population.

Beryl wished to marry Prince Endymion, but he was opposed to her movement, and was already in love with Princess Serenity of the Silver Millennium. Spurred on by her resentment, Beryl led a massive assault on the kingdom, killing Endymion, Serenity and the Sailor Senshi assigned to protect the princess, as well as countless others. Queen Serenity, however, survived the first wave and used the Silver Crystal to defeat Beryl and Metalia, wiping out their armies. The use of the crystal also cost Queen Serenity her life, but she sent her kingdom’s inhabitants forward in time to be reincarnated on Earth. (044)

Beryl and her minions were eventually reincarnated on Earth too, an event that triggered the awakening of the Sailor Team. Her priority was to revive the Dark Kingdom's supreme ruler, Queen Metalia, who required an immense amount of energy. Beryl originally planned to use the Silver Crystal for this purpose, but her minions were unable to find it. Instead, she sent her first general Jadeite to collect the energy of humans. (001) Jadeite succeeded in collecting a large amount of energy, but also angered Beryl by allowing first Sailor Moon, then Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars to awaken and disrupt the energy collection process. (011) Beryl was furious after Jadeite used Thetis, one of her Youma, in a plan that resulted in the Youma's death. (012) Beryl ordered Jadeite to kill the Sailor Senshi or face death: when he failed, she cast him into Eternal Sleep and allowed Nephrite to assume his position. (013) However, Nephrite had even less success in gathering energy, and Beryl began to grow angry at his arrogance. (023) She showed no concern when he was killed by Zoisite, who succeeded the position. Around this time, Beryl was able to partially awaken Metalia using the human energy her minions had collected. Metalia instructed her to locate the seven Rainbow Crystals in order to find the Silver Crystal, and this became Zoisite's new mission. (025)

The battle for the Rainbow Crystals soon became a three-way fight between the Sailor Senshi, Zoisite and Tuxedo Kamen. (026) When Zoisite and Kunzite attempted to kill Tuxedo Kamen in order to steal his Rainbow Crystals, he briefly lost his mask and Beryl recognised him as the reincarnation of Prince Endymion. Shocked by this discovery, she ordered a hasty withdrawal of her generals, later instructing them that Tuxedo Kamen was to be captured but on no account killed. (033, 034, 035) She provided no further explanation to her generals, and the order did not sit well with Zoisite, who had developed a strong rivalry with Tuxedo Kamen. Zoisite and Kunzite briefly succeeded in capturing the Rainbow Crystals, but Zoisite defied Beryl's orders and tried to kill Tuxedo Kamen, eventually seriously wounding him. This triggered Sailor Moon's transformation into Princess Serenity and pulled the Rainbow Crystals back to her, whereupon they combined into the Silver Crystal. (034) Zoisite and Kunzite were forced to withdraw, taking the unconscious Tuxedo Kamen with them. However, Beryl had been observing them and was aware of Zoisite's disobedience. Furious, she killed Zoisite with a blast of energy, refusing Kunzite's requests to spare him. Meanwhile, she followed Metalia's instructions to revive Tuxedo Kamen. (035)

The revived and brainwashed Tuxedo Kamen became an agent of the Dark Kingdom, adopting the name Endymion. (036) Beryl ordered Endymion to assist Kunzite in his plans, but Endymion refused, insisting on doing things his own way. Beryl allowed him to operate alone, leading to a strong rivalry between Endymion and Kunzite. (037) Eventually, Beryl acknowledged Kunzite's concerns that Endymion's loyalties may have been divided, and instructed Kunzite to spy on him. (040) This turned out to be correct, as Sailor Moon managed to transform Endymion back into Chiba Mamoru with the help of the Silver Crystal. Beryl then brought Mamoru back to the Dark Kingdom and began the process of brainwashing him more thoroughly. (041)

Beryl’s plans appeared to be coming to fruition as Metalia began to awaken, but she suffered another setback when the Sailor Senshi discovered her base and killed Kunzite. (044) In response, she sent the DD Girls to intercept and kill the Sailor Senshi. The Youma succeeded in killing four of them, but Sailor Moon remained alive. (045)

Wishing to dispose of her once and for all, Beryl teleported Sailor Moon inside her base and presented her with Endymion, now brainwashed and thoroughly compliant. She commanded him to kill Sailor Moon, and Endymion attacked. Sailor Moon was unable to restore his personality as she had done before, but she eventually managed to trigger his repressed memories with the Orgel. Furious, Beryl attacked them both with a shard of crystal. Endymion retaliated, throwing a rose that shattered the crystal and embedded itself in Beryl’s chest, although he was killed by the shrapnel from the crystal. Now weakened and dying, Beryl retreated and pleaded with Metalia for more power. Metalia broke out of her container, finally fully awake, and merged with Beryl’s physical form, creating Super Beryl.

Super Beryl rose to the surface and attacked Sailor Moon. The attack triggered Sailor Moon’s transformation into Princess Serenity. Super Beryl drained energy from all over the world to attack Serenity, but she fought back with the Silver Crystal. Finally, joined by the spirits of the deceased Sailor Senshi, Serenity overcame Super Beryl and destroyed the Dark Kingdom and its inhabitants. The Silver Crystal would resurrect the fallen Sailor Senshi, but Beryl, it seems, was gone forever. (046)

Super Beryl bears a strong physical resemblance to Queen Beryl, but it is unclear just how much of Beryl’s personality (if any) survived the fusion process. In fact, it seems more likely than not that Super Beryl was just a physical vessel for Queen Metalia, so in that case, Beryl probably died the instant Metalia entered her.

Beyond the Massacre

Beyond the MassacreA sculpture created by the Daimon Chokokkar and given the designation 'Work Number 001'. The small sand sculpture was then transformed by one of Chokokkar's earrings into a large stone creature, roughly human in shape and covered in spikes. Chokokkar ordered it to attack Sailor Uranus, and the statue complied. Sailor Uranus eventually disposed of the statute by throwing it into the river, after Sailor Neptune discovered that Chokokkar's creations dissolved on contact with water. (107)

Bidoh YuiThe civilian identity of Witches 5 member Viluy. Yui was a student of Mugen Academy, and came joint first with Mizuno Ami in the national practice exams. Like many of Mugen's high achievers, Yui was allocated teaching duties. Her identity was revealed to Tenoh Haruka, Kaioh Michiru and Ami shortly before her death. (122)

Big Flask

A defensive technique used by Rikoukeidar to evade Sailor Jupiter's Supreme Thunder attack. She collected the energy of the attack in a large conical flask and then released it back at her enemies. (029)

Bipierrot

(Kanamaru Hinako)

BipierrotA Cardian sent by Ail to steal energy from the performers and audience of Snow White and the Six Dwarves at Juuban Hall. Bipierrot resembled a clown, rode a unicycle and was able to attack with a giant expanding ball. She could also extend an energy-draining tentacle from her umbrella, and fire spikes from her hat

Bipierrot appeared onstage as the production began, confusing the audience and performers. She began demolishing the set, and blasted Ginga Natsumi out of the way when she tried to stop her. While she attempted to drain the energy of the audience, Tsukino Usagi transformed into Sailor Moon and challenged the monster. Bipierrot retaliated by extending a tentacle from her umbrella, which trapped Sailor Moon. The tentacle was cut of by the Moonlight Knight, and the rest of the Sailor Team joined the battle. Sailor Mars immobilised Bipierrot with an ofuda, then Sailor Mercury froze her with Shabon Spray Freezing. Sailor Moon then destroyed the monster with Moon Princess Halation. (056)

Black Crystal

Black CrystalAn item created by Nephrite, who intended to use it to locate the Silver Crystal. However, the Black Crystal reacted to Osaka Naru's feelings of love, leading Nephrite to mistakenly believe that she had the Silver Crystal. (023) Zoisite later kidnapped Naru in a bid to blackmail Nephrite into giving him the Black Crystal. Naru was rescued, but Nephrite was killed by Zoisite's Youma, and ownership of the Black Crystal passed to him. (024) Queen Beryl modified the crystal to detect the hosts of Rainbow Crystals, and Zoisite was able to use it to extract the Rainbow Crystals from his victims. (025) The crystal was also used to assume control over the resultant Youma, should they rebel. (027) After all of the Rainbow Crystals had been removed, Zoisite further modified the Black Crystal so that it could be used to transform ordinary humans into Youma. (032)

The Black Crystal was later used by the brainwashed Prince Endymion to capture the original hosts of the seven Rainbow Crystals, in an attempt to create a single supremely powerful Youma. He managed to imprison six of the hosts in the crystal before he was intercepted by Sailor Mercury, who destroyed the crystal and released its inhabitants. (041)

The Dark Kingdom's Black Crystal is not to be confused with the Black Moon's Evil Black Crystal.

Black Hole

An astrophysical phenomenon occasionally used as a weapon by enemies of the Sailor Senshi. The sabotaged staff given to Petz by Rubeus was designed to create a black hole on his command, powerful enough to engulf the Sailor Team and the Phantom Sisters. This black hole collapsed after the Sailor Team used their combined Sailor Planet Power to destroy the staff at the centre of the anomaly. (072)

Black Lady

(Araki Kae)

Black LadyAn evil, adult form of Chibi Usa created by Wiseman. Wiseman manipulated Chibi Usa's memories, convincing her that she was unloved, and exposed her to an enormous amount of Dark Power. He instructed Prince Dimande to take her to the twentieth century in order to secure victory for the Black Moon Clan.

Black Lady arrived in twentieth century Juuban with Dimande and began to feed energy into a fragment of Evil Black Crystal, expanding it exponentially. With the crystal, Black Lady and Dimande intended to open an enormous Dark Gate to the future. The crystal was soon discovered by the Sailor Team, and Black Lady appeared to defend it. Only when Luna-P moved towards her did they realise that she was Chibi Usa. Black Lady infected Luna-P with Dark Power and used the toy as a weapon against the Sailor Team. Sailor Moon attempted to restore Chibi Usa's personality with the Silver Crystal, and was on the verge of succeeding when Wiseman appeared and began tampering with her memories again. The healing failed, and Black Lady announced that Earth would soon be blasted by the Evil Black Crystal from the future. She then retreated with Wiseman and Dimande. (085)

Wiseman tried to use Black Lady to assassinate Saphir, after he threatened to reveal Wiseman's true intentions to Dimande. Black Lady was blocked by the Sailor Team, and Saphir was ultimately killed by Wiseman himself. Sailor Moon tried again to restore Chibi Usa's personality, and was once again unsuccessful. (086) The Sailor Team and Tuxedo Kamen infiltrated the Evil Black Crystal fragment and, following Dimande's murder at the hands of Wiseman, made their way to its summit, where the Dark Gate was now at full size. Black Lady appeared at the gate's entrance and declared that she was a servant of the Death Phantom. (087) She was to be used as a conduit for the Evil Black Crystal's power, with which she intended to destroy the Earth. The Sailor Team protested, pointing out that the energy would also kill her, but she didn't care. She released a bolt of energy at Sailor Moon, but the blast was blocked by Tuxedo Kamen. Black Lady was confused by the concept of self-sacrifice, which was contrary to the nihilistic outlook she had been given by Wiseman. Her doubts were once again countered by Wiseman who reappeared to reinforce his brainwashing. Black Lady resumed her attack, but the Sailor Team combined their power, and Sailor Moon once again exposed Black Lady to the Silver Crystal's energy. This time, the crystal's light engulfed Sailor Moon and transformed her into Neo Queen Serenity. Serenity began to trigger Black Lady's repressed memories, but Wiseman interfered, trapping Black Lady, Serenity and Tuxedo Kamen in a column of Dark Power. He tried again to remove Black Lady's memories of her past. Serenity warned Black Lady that the Dark Power surrounding them would kill her, and Black Lady pointed out that it was more dangerous to Serenity and Tuxedo Kamen. Serenity said that she only cared about her daughter's safety, and used the Silver Crystal again. The column of Dark Power dissipated, revealing Serenity, Tuxedo Kamen and Chibi Usa, now restored to her old self. (088)

Black Moon

A colloquial term for Nemesis, the future home of the Black Moon Clan. (068, 082)

Black Moon Clan

A warlike, technologically advanced faction from Nemesis, led by Prince Dimande. Its members included Saphir, Esmeraude, Rubeus and the four Phantom Sisters. (068, 070, 073, 075, 083) The clan was formed from the descendants of a faction who fled Earth in the thirtieth century, having instigated an unsuccessful attack against Neo Queen Serenity. Over time, the planet's inhabitants absorbed the dark energy produced by Nemesis and developed supernatural powers. (083)

With the assistance of Wiseman, the clan initiated a devastating attack on the city of Crystal Tokyo, although their progress was eventually halted by the powerful shields originating from Crystal Points and maintained by the Sailor Senshi. (068) They established a forward base on the outskirts of the city, but could advance no further. (083)

Their main power came from the Evil Black Crystal, a potent substance with great destructive potential. However, Wiseman insisted that the Evil Black Crystal was still vulnerable to the power of the Silver Crystal. (075) After Chibi Usa fled to the twentieth century, Wiseman advised Rubeus to follow her, destroy the Silver Crystal and contaminate the city's future Crystal Points with Dark Power. Rubeus arrived in the twentieth century with the Phantom Sisters, but their operations were repeatedly compromised by the Sailor Team. (068) Rubeus' manipulation of his troops eventually led the Phantom Sisters to defect, but in the process he discovered that Sailor Moon had the Silver Crystal. (072)  He faced Sailor Moon in a showdown on board his UFO, but was defeated, and was killed when the vessel exploded. His position was inherited by Esmeraude. (074)

Esmeraude, however, failed to open Dark Gates to the twentieth century as she had intended to do. The Sailor Team, meanwhile, crossed over to the thirtieth century. (082) Esmeraude went to Wiseman in the hopes of gaining more power, but was betrayed by him and transformed by the Evil Black Crystal into the Esmeraude Dragon, which was then killed by the Sailor Team. Wiseman, meanwhile, had kidnapped Chibi Usa in the hope of combining her power with that of the Evil Black Crystal. (084) He succeeded, creating Black Lady, who was sent to the twentieth century with Dimande. There, Black Lady began pouring energy into a huge fragment of Evil Black Crystal, intent on creating an enormous Dark Gate to channel energy from the crystal's main body on Nemesis. (085) Saphir, meanwhile, discovered that Wiseman intended to betray the clan, and suspended the operation of the Evil Black Crystal Reactor as a precaution. Wiseman became aware of his suspicion, and tried to label Saphir a traitor, eventually killing him before he could reveal Wiseman's deception to Dimande. (086)

Dimande was, by now, quite sure that Wiseman had his own agenda, but was reluctant to sever ties with him as they still apparently shared the same goal. After an encounter with Sailor Moon, the prince was convinced otherwise, as Sailor Moon insisted there was no reason why their peoples couldn't coexist in peace. Wiseman appeared again, challenging Dimande to kill Sailor Moon. He refused, and Wiseman mortally injured Dimande. The prince entrusted the fate of his clan to Sailor Moon, and died. (087) Wiseman and the Evil Black Crystal were eventually destroyed by Sailor Moon and Chibi Usa, saving the planet Nemesis. (088)

The Black Moon Clan first appear in Episode 60, but they are not named until Episode 68.

Blizzar

(Sasaki Yuko)

BlizzarThe Youma form of skier Yamamoto Saeko, who was brainwashed by Kunzite of the Dark Kingdom. Saeko was able to transform into Blizzar and then back again at will. Even in her human form, she had significant supernatural powers, such as the ability to manipulate snow and cause avalanches. In her Youma form her powers were even greater, allowing her to trigger earthquakes and create chasms in the ground. She was extremely agile and fought using a sharpened shard of ice as a weapon.

Blizzar first showed her Youma form during the Moon Princess Contest at the Moonlight Course. As Saeko, she had already disrupted the competition so that Tsukino Usagi and Hino Rei were the only remaining skiers. Believing one of them to be Sailor Moon, she trapped them both in a chasm along with Kumada Yuuichirou, who had become caught in the avalanche. She froze Yuuichirou solid and accused Rei of being Sailor Moon, but soon learned the truth when Rei and Usagi transformed into Sailor Mars and Sailor Moon respectively. Blizzar, however, was too quick for them to catch, and had the upper hand until Prince Endymion, still under the Dark Kingdom's control, appeared to take over the fight. During the battle he experienced a brief shift in his allegiances, and destroyed Blizzar's weapon, allowing Sailor Moon to return her to her original form with Moon Healing Escalation. (038)

Bob-Floy

A Tokyo ice cream store which was situated on a Crystal Point. As such, it became a target for Rubeus, who sent Berthier and her Droid Nipasu to contaminate the area with Dark Power. Nipasu froze the shop and its employees, allowing Berthier to seize control of the business. While the frozen staff were hidden in the basement, Berthier began production of a new brand of highly addictive ice cream, which made customers feel hot and crave even more, as well as making them unusually aggressive. Nipasu, disguised as a human, was placed in charge of selling the produce, and the store gradually contaminated the area with Dark Power over a period of ten days. Eventually, Artemis became suspicious of the store and went to investigate. Upon discovering him, Nipasu froze him into a block of ice. The others soon became concerned as to his whereabouts, and Aino Minako recalled hearing his suspicions concerning Bob-Floy. She and Luna paid the shop a visit and were confronted by Nipasu, who attacked. Minako contacted the rest of the Sailor Team, with the exception of Mizuno Ami, who was supposed to be leaving for Germany. The Sailor Team arrived but could not fight against Nipasu's incredible freezing powers. They were unexpectedly rescued by Sailor Mercury, who had changed her mind about leaving and paralysed the Droid with her new attack, Shine Aqua Illusion. Sailor Moon then destroyed the monster, allowing her victims to thaw out. (062)

Zoisite established control over him using the Black Crystal, and Bunbo was compelled to attack the Sailor Senshi instead. Sailor Moon's first use of Moon Healing Escalation against him proved ineffective, as he was strong enough to resist it. He was weakened by attacks from Sailor Mars and Sailor Jupiter, then crippled when Sailor Moon used Moon Tiara Action to attach her tiara to his head. On the second attempt, Sailor Moon restored Bunbo to his human form. (027)

Burning Mandala

Burning MandalaAn attack learned by Sailor Mars shortly after she received her second transformation pen. The attack was initiated by Sailor Mars drawing a stream of fire through the air, which joined up to form a ring. The ring morphed into a giant Mandala, then the fire coalesced together and was fired at the enemy in the form of small flaming rings. This attack was first used against Koan during an attack on the Hikawa Shrine. (063)
