How to use the Encyclopaedia

Well, to be honest, it's not that hard. But what the hell, here's a guide anyway.

The layout of this resource is based on (that is, nicked from) the Star Trek Encyclopaedia. Except that this is better, because it's on the internet and has hyperlinks and stuff. Also it's about Sailor Moon, which is better than Star Trek. Do you see?

All entries are listed alphabetically, and everything's cross-referenced, so stuff should be easy to find. As of right now the encyclopaedia is a work in progress, so if you notice an omission then it's probably because I haven't reached that point in the series yet. Check the updates page for where I'm currently up to.

Anyway, up there at the top of the page is a picture of a typical page from the encyclopaedia. Look at Garoben there, with her face. The numbers mark various features you may encounter, which are explained here:

  1. Alphabetical links. There is a page in the encyclopaedia for each letter of the alphabet. Use these to navigate to the page for a specific letter.
  2. Seiyuu list link. Takes you straight to a complete list of every credited voice actor ever to have appeared in Sailor Moon.
  3. Episode codes link. Brings up a list of episode codes in the sidebar, which link directly to entries for those episodes.
  4. Refresh title. If weak puns and tenuous references are your thing, click here to bring up another random title banner. Note: There is at least one browser in which this feature doesn't seem to work. I have no idea why.
  5. Takes you back to the title page.
  6. Sidebar links. A set of links to every article on the page.
  7. Article title. Article titles are always in black bold text.
  8. Seiyuu credit. These are in green italicised text. Clicking on a credit will take you to that actor's entry in the seiyuu database.
  9. Article link. These are in red bold text. All articles are cross-referenced, so whenever the name of a separate article appears in the current article, there will be a link to it.
  10. Episode reference. Like a good little fanboy, I have included references for all of the data presented. If you want to check which episode the code represents, use the Episode codes link in the title frame.
  11. Nakayoshi guide data. The Nakayoshi Anime Albums often contained extra data that wasn't mentioned in the anime. I've included it here as it's quite interesting, but do bear in mind that it isn't necessarily canon, and also that it has been translated from Japanese by somebody with only a minimal grasp of the language...

Compatability

This site is not standards-compliant, and never will be, but it does work in all browsers that people might realistically be expected to use. It's been tested in Internet Explorer, Netscape 6, Mozilla, Opera, and yes... even the whorish Firefox. It's also pretty much perfect in Netscape 4, although whether or not the Japanese text in the seiyuu section is displayed seems to depend on some unknown factor, probably the phases of the moon.

It probably doesn't work in bizarre text-only browsers, which are nowadays only used by computer science students who ironically have access to any browser they want. But they enjoy surfing the web using Lynx anyway, just so that they can repeatedly stumble across sites that aren't compatible, and then act surprised and disgusted.

Well, now that I've alienated a significant proportion of my audience, I'll go on to say that the site requires frames, and ideally Javascript. It is possible to navigate the site without Javascript, but it is a uniquely annoying experience that I can't really recommend.

Finally, it's been reported that the "Refresh Title" feature doesn't work in Opera. As it's the least important feature on the site, I'm not that bothered really. You can achieve the same effect by refreshing the whole page, but this does take a bit longer. And is ultimately pointless anyway. Oh well.
